Traveling With Your Pet

The government requires health certificates signed by a veterinarian for pets who will be traveling across state or country borders, via airplane or car, in order to prevent the spread of animal diseases.   The purpose of the certificate is to show that the animal is current on vaccines and healthy, destination address and phone number, owner's address and phone number, and veterinary clinic information.  The following are general guidelines that may change from time to time.  Please check with the airline you are flying with, the country you travel to ( if traveling internationally), and your veterinarian when making your travel plans.  Some important information about health certificates:

bullet

Must be issued within 10 days of departure date to be valid.

bullet

Are valid for thirty days after issued date.

For example: if you are departing on August 1st, the certificate would need to be issued on or after July 22nd.  It world then be valid for a retune trip within thirty days of the date issued.

bullet

If you are going on a extended stay that outlasts the validity of your health certificate you need to have a new one issued for your pet by a veterinarian.

bullet

International travel requires that your pet's health certificate be stamped by the USDA office in St. Paul to be valid.

bullet

Some countries require additional documentation so please let us know where you are traveling so we can check into what documents you will need.

Different airlines have different requirements about traveling with your pet;  some things to consider and ask about when booking your reservation:

bullet

Required size of kennel.

bullet

Food and water availability for your pet if going on a ling flight or in the cargo space.

bullet

Check-in  time requirements.

bullet

Weather (some airlines do not allow pets to travel as cargo in the summer months).

*If you are traveling south with your pet you may want to purchase flea preventative.  Also, if you are traveling with your dog outside of what is considered heartworm season  In Minnesota (May through November), Please ask your veterinarian if he recommends giving heartworm preventative during your trip.
